Monday Movie Meme - True Romance

Today's Monday Movie Meme from the Bumbles revolves around our favorite romantic movie. (Notice I said favorite, singular?). When I started thinking about this task, I just shook my head. How to decide only one? There are so many wonderful romantic moments out there...When Harry Met Sally? Titanic? Gone With the Wind? The Notebook? Dirty Dancing? Moulin Rouge? But at the end of the day, I decided that the answer lay in the numbers. There must be something to it, when I've seen a movie no less than thirty times and can recite the lines word for word. That would be...

An Officer and a Gentleman

Ah yes, Richard Gere. So many ugly things have been said about him over the years, but you really can't take anything away from him here. I fell in love with him in this movie. A movie about a wise-acre punk who learns about friendship, love and honor. But enough about that, what about that final scene when he confidently strides into the dismal, dark factory in his white Navy uniform and whisks Paula off her feet and carries her out to a happier life, while her friend is screaming "way to go Paula, way to go!". Be still my heart. There were times when this fantasy got me through a workday.

How easy would it be for you to pick your favorite romantic movie? Did one immediately come to mind? Please share!

Shiver, by Maggie Stiefvater. Half way through reading it and totally wrapped up in the love story.

I also love An Officer and a Gentleman. I have so many favourite romance films but the ones that spring to mind are the devastating historical romances that are both adapted from works of literary fiction: Gone With the Wind and Last of the Mohicans; both would make it to the top of my list of all-time favourite movies, and not just romance ones.

My favorite Romantic "movie" would be "The Sound of Music". I know, I know, I cheated a little...but it is out on DVD!

I liked Murphy's Romance.

Can you believe I've never seen this movie?!!! Even though I love Debra Winger, but I'm just so-so about Richard Gere, so maybe that's the reason. I guess I'd better put it on the to-see list.

This is like those potato chips: nobody can pick (eat) just one! GWTW...Pretty Woman...When Harry Met Sally...You've Got Mail (it's about a bookstore!!!)
When Harry Met Sally--because I own & have memorized the soundtrack & who could resist that scene on the top of the Empire State Building?

Mmmmm - Richard Gere was sooo handsome and sexy - talk about being swept off your feet. Lucky girl. I haven't seen this in eons. Why is it never on TV? I remember the soundtrack too - what was that duet? Up Where We Belong? I had to play that for piano lessons - but I didn't mind because all I could think about was growing up and snagging me a man in uniform ;0)

I've never seen this movie - I'll have to think about getting it from the library or netflixing it.

Wendy - I've not heard of this one, but will go look it up!

Paperback Reader - Gone With the Wind was also on my runner up list! I think AOAAG came at a ripe moment for me...I was a teenager and easily swept away. It had such an impact on me!

Craftymoose - oh yeah! Captain has got it ALL going on! And Maria is so beautiful. I would wholeheartedly agree with you!

Beth - I'm not sure if I've seen this one, but in the back of my mind I'm seeing James Garner and Sally Field? Am I right? I don't remember!

Susan - you should give him a chance with this movie. He looks pretty darned good in that uniform.

ds - see, that was my problem at 5am this morning. So many good ones that have all reduced me to a puddle at one point or another. I had to go with the one I've seen two billion times!

Bumbles - he WAS quite the hottie back then. I played that song on the piano too. Must have been mass-mailed to all the piano teachers.

Alyce - if you do, let me know what you think. You could conceivably watch it with the hubby. There's something for everyone in that movie.

"Get jets." I remember how much Paula loved him, even after she thought it was over, and unselfishly wished him well by the jukebox. Yeah, this is one very romantic movie!

I just saw this one on cable TV last week but it was late at night and I fell asleep before the end...darn it! This is one of my favorites!

You're right - that's definitely a good one, even though it's corny, who can resist it?!!!

Wonderful choice, Sandy! I really enjoyed this movie and Debra Winger and Richard Gere aren't my favorite actors, I don't dislike them but could take them or leave them, but they were both great in this movie.

Oh you should, Sandy :) It's lovely. Of course, I posted a book when everyone else is posting movies *blush*

I see quite a few have never seen this move. Yu can add me to that list. That scene is a classic though. I have seen it many times before.

It's been so long since I last saw this movie that I hardly remember it, sad to say.

This question is hard for me. So many come to mind.

Can you believe I've never seen this movie?! What is wrong with me :)

One of my favorite romantic stories is Il Postino although it was sad in the end.

The Gal - but its not over! He rescues her from a life of drugery! Sigh.

Kathleen - it seems to be on TV now and again, and I have to stop and watch every time!

Jill -I know I can't resist. It is soooo predictable, but really feeds a fantasy.

Amy - they were perfect together in this movie. Great chemistry. Although Richard Gere was so awesome in Primal Fear.

Wendy - I kinda figured that out, but that's OK! I was with you!

Nicole - OK, but now you have to see the whole thing! Have the girls over and make some popcorn!

Wendy (the feline one) - I know. What a way to start Monday mornings! It always gets my brain working. But it was quite hard for me to decide.

Iliana - you people! You have to see it! Il Postino is just precious. And heartbreaking. But beautiful!

Ooh, good choice! I love Richard Gere in this movie. It certainly helped when I met met my husband, since he was in the Navy at the time :)

Believe it or not... I'm not a huge fan of romantic movies. ^_^ I guess my fave would be Pretty In Pink, or... hm. The Illusionist?

Oh, no I thought of one--The Butcher's Wife! Love that movie. :)

I have to go with When Harry Met Sally. It's just so cute!
