Sunday Salon: Hello? Hello?

Good morning all of my friends.  *tap tap*  Hello?  Anyone out there?  It sure has been quiet around here lately.  I know this is the nature of summer...kids are out of school and buzzing about, everyone's on vacation, unplugging from the blog, so it can be expected.  In fact, I'm giving some thought to unplugging myself, in order to fully focus on my family and getting caught up.  I've never done this before and it scares me, but in reality, I'm not sure anyone minds so much.  It might be healthy.  At a minimum, I've planned to eliminate my Friday posts in the month of July.  I'll wait for a Muse to come up and tap me on the shoulder before I determine whether I will fully go dark.

So not much to report for the week.  We've still been deluged with rain, which upset one night of football camp and horseback riding.  Daughter has finished the first session of summer school, and will start round two next Tuesday.  Runs and workouts going well.  Husband is obsessed with the Euro 2012, particularly because some of the games take place in his hometown Wroclaw, Poland.  We had a Cabernet wine tasting last night at my buddy's wine shop, in honor of Father's Day.  Our last two volunteer sessions at the animal shelter have been partially focused on HOLDING RABBITS.  No, the daughter has not given up on this dream, which you may recall me mentioning last year.  Parents are still resisting.  This one in particular was the object of much affection.  Her name is Valentine.

We all saw Prometheus last Sunday evening, and we LOVED it.  Some have disparaged the thing, but we adore these kinds of movies, and it was a serious hit in our family.  It is rated R, primarily for two scenes that effectively grossed me out, but didn't phase my two kids.  There is very little language, and only implied sex (less explicit than their health classes).  My "review" (babbling) is coming tomorrow.

My reading is so freaking slow, I'm driving myself nuts.  I did finish "The Innocent" by Taylor Stevens on audio, and I'm completely invested in this series at this point.  She rocks.  I'm now working my way through Mary Roach's "Spook"...my first Mary Roach!  She is a hoot.  I did complete "Burrows" by Reavis Wortham and really enjoyed it - much darker than "The Rock Hole".  This guy has a literary voice that is really unique and I'm all in at this point.  Keep them coming Rev!  I just started Alma Katsu's "The Reckoning" (sequel to "The Taker").  I've been waiting for this one and wish I could just lock myself in a room and READ it, and ignore my duties. Alas, my husband and kids want to be fed and require the toilets to be clean.  The nerve!

Besides horseback riding and church today, I'm having visions of pool-floating and making my husband fish and chips...his request for Father's Day.  We are gearing up for next week, when my husband's Polish nephew and girlfriend comes to visit, and my birthday.  I'm having a hard time coming up with something I need.  I am hoping that my mom goes for the Amazon gift card (refilling my Kindle needs - hint hint mom!), but what to ask of my hubby?  I feel like I have everything I need.  I am blessed.  Unless you can give me some good ideas!  Any suggestions?

Yes, it has been silent! I was blaming my Dutch lit month, which is in itself not a very welcoming and popular subject it seems, but I forgot summer has already started for so many of you. It can be discouraging when it's more silent in the blogging world, but I just wanted to let you know that I am still reading! It is interesting that you find it scary to unplug for a while. It can be very healthy, but at times I also feel as if I miss my "support group" somehow? Anyway, good luck in figuring out what you want to do. You should just do whatever feels best for you at the moment.

And ahhh.. a picture of a rabbit! I was/am like your daughter, it seems. I still dream of owning a rabbit (I had one as a child), but allergies probably mean I shouldn't.

I'm sad that your animal shelter volunteering is coming to an end. Emma needs to visit at least once a week for her animal fix! I know what you need for your birthday. A shopping spree! A bikini, short shorts and sleeveless shirts to compliment that awesome physique!

One session of summer school is over already? Wow!

I know what you mean about the birthday stuff. It gets harder and harder to come up with gift ideas.

I so need to read Mary Roach! And yes, things always get quiet in blogging land around this time of year, don't they? The weather has been awful around here the past two weeks or so, so it doesn't truly feel like summer for me yet. Anyway, all this to say that yes, breaks can be scary, but they also do me a world of good. I always come back from them feeling refreshed and more motivated to blog.

I understand your need to take a break, but I for one will miss not reading you every day. My book group read Roach's Bonk this year and complimented it with reading Shades of Gray. What a hoot we had, all agreeing it is not the type of litereature we like to read but we had so much fun laughing. One of our members even made a game we played based on all the repeated lines in he book.

On a more serious note I am reading Anita Shreves A Change in Altitude which is okay so far and takes place in Africa.

Enjoy yiur Fathers Day!

Sounds like a relatively calm week for you. Keep up the running. Glad to hear it's going well!

When I stopped trying to post something everyday, I started liking my blog a lot more. I wouldn't worry about it. And go ahead and take a break if you want to. Your readers will come back when you do.

As for birthday gifts, I like vintage port wines myself. Gift certificates to fancy restaurants are also good.

I will never get enough Amazon giftcards :) Not gonna be a problem for me ;)
I agree with CB...the blog should be a place you enjoy; if you force yourself to post everyday, then it becomes a job. Most of us didn't start these blogs bc we needed another job ;) That being said, I don't want you to go dark bc I always enjoy your posts!!

Love the bunny pic, just say no.
I simply don't read fast enough to blog daily, I wish I did. I've got so many e galleys on my nook it's intimidating, I need to stop feeling compelled to read buzz books and read what I want. Listening to one now you will enjoy. Wait for review, but it's much talked about.

Enjoy your birthday, and beyond jewelry I'm out of ideas, books or new Pandora charms are my go to ideas for my family. Ha ha

My favorite gift from my husband is extra clothes money and an entire guilt-free day all by myself in which to do the shopping (not on my birthday though). My husband gets to entertain the kids on that day, and I usually choose which day I want it all to happen, that way it happens when I'm in the mood to shop. It takes something that could be a chore and turns it into a special occasion. :) I have noticed that my favorite gifts from him in the past have tended to be those where he takes over one of my jobs/chores for a while while I get pampered.

We have lots of bunnies hippity hopping around our yard this summer - so your daughter can have one of them if Valentine gets scooped up - that is one cute rabbit though.

I will send you a little present from our upcoming concert event as chatted behind the blogs.

Blog when you want, but more often than myself lately!

Sounds like a full week! The wine tasting sounds heavenly. :) I know what you mean about things being quiet - they are my way, too. If you do decide to take a break, you have to at least wait until after Audiobook Week!

And I'm so glad you loved The Innocent - isn't Michael awesome? I love her.

Pool-floating sounds soo good. I envy you. It's nowhere near warm enough here for that! I woudl miss you if you went on hiatus but I understand!

I want a bunny so bad! I asked for one for Christmas and my mom was like, "You MUST be joking."

It has been really quiet around the book blogosphere. I always get bummed out when things aren't going on with the internets.

Yay for Mary Roach! I love her books because she is just so much fun.

I'm curious if you mean taking a break or giving up blogging completely. I'm hoping it'll be the latter or a reduction in your blogging, maybe to part-time or something. I'd be very sad to see you go completely. But I understand with your kids growing up and you being so busy all the time, life just flies by.

Valentine is adorable! I love rabbits, used to have them as a child, they're a lot of fun. It's so great how much your daughter loves animals.

I was looking at 2 of Mary Roach's books in B&N this week. I haven't read any of hers yet but will soon.
I have Taylore Steven's Informationist, need to get to it soon so I don't fall too far behind as she writes more.

Have you ever had a gift such as the wine of the month club? They're are some really good ones.

I hope you have a good week!

Pool floating sounds good especially since its been so windy and chilly here. It has been quiet but that's ok. I can't keep up right now anyway with everything else going on. My reading isn't going the best either. I'm reading what I have to and even liking it. I don't know, it just feels like that drive is missing right now. I think a blog break is good sometimes. It's a good feeling to just read and not have to worry about anything else. Hope you have a good week Sandy and a good birthday. As for gifts, I know what you mean. All I ever want now is gift certificates for books or iTunes. Lol.

My reading is going well and I have reviews posted a few weeks out (which is a first for me) and I can't figure out how I managed to do it. I've been flitting around crazy with this crazy schedule my kids have.

This is production week. I have three new, gray hairs. After this weekend, I will be GOLDEN.Or maybe bald, but still better than this week.

Yes, it's definitely quieter as summer is upon us. Maybe we should all make a pact not post on weekends? I'm hoping to take things a little easier the next couple of months, too. This summer may be the last time we're all together for an extended period of time. Daughter #1 will move to NYC this fall - no more summers home :-(

I knew you would love Mary Roach! If you take a blogging break it might be really good for you and you know we'll be here when you get back!

Totally dark for the summer? What is this madness??

As to a gift, how about a rabbit? Lol...lol

I was going to take just a few days off and ended up staying away from the blog and the computer for about a week. It was great … and necessary. I think I shall continue to do this throughout the summer (AKA when I have no time to myself).

I'm here. 3 weeks behind, but I'm here. :) I have a couple Mary Roach books and need to find them. Everyone always says how great they are. I'm jealous of Criminal in your sidebar. :)
