Sunday Salon: A grand experiment and a happy dog

A good Sunday morning to all of my friends!  Another busy week on my end.  Some highlights include a mammogram, a haircut, horseback riding lessons x 2, volleyball practice x 6 and two games (girls won, boys lost), the Angel of Death "ramping things up a bit" on the workout front which equals pain all over, daughter's selection of high school classes (stress), and Animal Shelter duty.  I took a couple of pictures of some sweet babies...a one year-old tortoise shell short hair who just wanted held, and possibly the happiest dog I've ever met named Chocolate.  Chocolate was just a big hunk of love.  We also walked an 8 month old Pug (no picture of him - he was running around and avoiding the camera), and had he not already been adopted, I would have taken him home TODAY.

Our Heathrow Literary Society met on Tuesday to discuss "Cold Sassy Tree" by Olive Ann Burns.  The general verdict was positive, with only two out of the group of eight or nine not really all that impressed.  Next month we will be talking about "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand, which I have already read with my other book club.  I look forward to that discussion...I loved that book.

Last night my husband and I were lucky enough to score free corporate box seats to an Elton John concert.  For a guy who is 65 years old, he has a lot of energy!  Dude delivered, without rest, for 3 hours.  Not only did he rock my face off, the good-looking, rock star Croatians on the cellos (who played a little Nirvana, U2 and AC/DC at the beginning) blew our minds as well.  I also appreciated being able to GO OUT with my husband sans kids.  It doesn't happen very often.

Strangely, for all the running around I did this week, I was very productive with my reading.  On audio I listened to "Stay Awake" by Dan Chaon (all I can say is...what the hell?) and "The House I Loved" by Tatiana De Rosnay (very charming).  I am now several discs into John Hart's "The Last Child" based on Carrie's recommendation.

In print, I finished the last two Pekkanens to wrap up Pekkanen Until You Puke Month, "These Girls" and "All Is Bright".  I am SO a die hard fan at this point.  I am now nearly finished with A BOOK OF POEMS!!!  Yeah you heard that right.  I figured why not.  National Poetry Month is in April, and I was intrigued with the Nobel Prize-winning Wislawa Szymborska who just died a little over a month ago.  I can't say that I'm a poetry convert, but I'm glad I am doing this.  A grand experiment!

Whatever craziness happens next week, I shall be keeping my eye on Friday, when we leave for a couple of nights on Kiawah Island and three nights in Charleston.  We are planning on doing some golfing, bike riding, touring historic Charleston and visiting a plantation.  The only downside is that I am going to have to stay away from the shrimp and grits!  And the wine!

Until next week...

Aww - I think I can tell what you mean about Chocolate by that picture alone. Have a great trip next weekend, Sandy! Sounds like you have some very fun plans :)

If the mammogram was a highlight, I'd hate to hear the low points ;-)

It does indeed sound like the animal work is rewarding, and I am breathing a big sigh of relief over that. I am also glad that you got a chance to see Elton John in concert, and that you will be visiting Charleston soon. What an awesome vacation! Have a happy week, my friend!

It sounds like you will be ending up with a new animal at one point. It just inevitable at this point.

I want to read de Rosnay's new book really badly! I wish I had half your workout ethic.

Pugs are very cute! I'm almost sad the pug got rehomed, but I'm sure it wont be long before another grabs your attention!

My son volunteered at an animal rescue but the dogs all had issues... three legs, visible abuse. They were and are the long timers that pretty much live at the rescue. Very sad.

My body is falling apart and it should be going in the other direction. I need Andre!

How did you read and do all that other stuff? Will you get to go to Husk while you're in Charleston?

I'm just waiting to see how long it takes before you adopt an animal. :) Your vacation time sounds like it will be wonderful.
