Sunday Salon: The calm before...

Yes, so I'm popping in here a little later than I normally do.  We had a late night last night.  We attended (I think for the third of fourth year in a row) the monstrously-sized "Taste of the Nation" fundraiser with some folks from my husband's company.  Food stations, wine stations, and silent auction...you know the drill.  Usually we walk away winning something, and I was doing my best...a Big Lebowski bowling pin signed by Jeff Bridges, an Aveda gift basket, Erasure concert tickets, a golf package.  But apparently the economic downturn is over in Orlando.  We walked out with nothing.

The last time I checked in we were at the beach.  We swam in the ocean (water was 90 degrees, I kid you not), burrowed under our beach umbrellas and napped and/or read, we ate at some great restaurants.  We went and saw "Guardians of the Galaxy" and loved it.  But on Tuesday morning, we grumpily drove back home to reality.  Haven't seen my daughter much since then.  She has an insane amount of work still left to do before school starts this Tuesday.  Haven't seen much of my son either.  He has, you know, video games to play and stuff.  His school starts the following Monday, so he has a little bit more freedom left.  The week was pretty low key.  A couple doctor appointments and that was it.

It has been oppressively hot and humid.  It is hard to want to go outside frankly.  There is the pool, but you are guaranteed a storm in the afternoon so you have to make it quick.

I plowed through Liane Moriarty's "Big Little Lies" at the beach.  It was a pretty quick 458 pages, which is an accomplishment for me.  I loved that book.  She has got such a way with portraying life as a woman today.  I'm going to highly recommend it to everyone I see.  I read a couple more "Saga" graphic novels (I've gotten through three so far) and I am hooked.  I'm now about halfway through Karen White's fourth Tradd Street book "Return to Tradd Street".  It is a bit of a mystery why I continue to read these.  I love the Southernness of it all, but the behavior of the two protagonists drive me MAD.  I do like to finish what I start though.

On audio I finished "The Silkworm", which I adored.  This second installment is much darker than the first, a little more complex of a mystery.  For me the icing on the cake is the narration of Robert Glenister, which is genius.  I then blew through "The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry", something I should not have put off as long as I did.  Narrated by Scott Brick, this is the sweetest, most touching story.  Something I'll carry around with me for a long time, and it is a love story to books.  So all around, I've had some amazing reading lately.

Not much planned for the day.  We went for almost a two hour walk this morning, so the exercise is done.  Maybe a trip to Target, maybe some PGA on TV this afternoon.  Good Sunday activities.

The water must have been 90 degrees in Sanibel a couple of weeks ago, too... I was amazed! Didn't think it could get that warm. Still, it's a beach and I'm always happy to be there.

I'm near the top of the list for Big Little Lies and can't wait. It will be my intro to Liane Moriarty.

A.J. Fikry didn't quite do it for me (although I was still a wreck from the amazing We Are Not Ourselves), but I just finished The Thoughts and Happenings of Wilfred Price Purveyor of Superior Funerals and loved it!

I used to hate the start of school so I feel for you.

Our weather has been weird - cool and rainy this week. We got 3.5 inches of rain in just a couple hours last night so things are a mess here.

2 of Vance's high school friends popped into the store yesterday - it turns out one of them has moved here. He had fun going out with them last night and reminiscing and catching up.

I find it so funny that you're continuing to read the Tradd Street books even though you hate Melanie and Jack. I personally was entertained by their banter and inability to figure out how to just be normal with one another, but to each their own. ;)

And OMG A.J. Fikry! I loved that book so, so much. And new Liane Morarity! I need to find time for that one.

I have so not read most of the books you have read lately. How did we get so out of sync?!!!

I didn't realize your kids would be at diff high schools. Nick returns next Wednesday I loved AJ FIKRY so much and Moriarty doesn't fail me.
I have mixed emotions on the returning to school.

I love the sound of a warm sea, but I'm really hoping it gets less hot/humid before I get there - I'm not used to that sort of thing! Looking forward to seeing you soon!

I hope the food and wine was good at the fundraiser.

I am glad to hear you loved Big Little Lies. I would like to read that at some point. It's on my wish list. :-)

You hit the nail on the head with your comment about the Tradd Street books. I said after the last one I read I wouldn't read anymore in the series because of those two protagonists, and yet, I recently bought the next book in the series. I do love the writing and the "Southernness of it all" as you describe it.

I hope you have a great week, Sandy! It's back to work for me today. I have a doctor's appointment on Friday, but that's the only thing slightly out of the ordinary.

It has been humid here. Nothing like what you get where you are, but 65% is a lot for us since we are normally so dry.

School. Not ready for it. The Girl went back to the school's daycare today but classes don't start until Wed for her and Thursday for The Teen.

I think the college class this summer paid off because The Teen seems to be focused on college now. I am very happy to see it.

The Storied Life and Big Little Lies are definitely ones I wish to read soon.
I used to live in FL, lived on both coasts of it, and know all about the humidity, yikes! We had a pool also, and used it in the mornings after breakfast because the rain would come in the afternoon around 3 pm like clockwork. Enjoy the rest of your summer vacation with the kids.

I'm thinking I should splurge and buy Big Little Lies on my kindle for my Australia trip! It's an Australian author, so that's totally justified... right?

A few days at the beach sounds wonderful about now. We spent four days at the local children's hospital with my oldest son where he got diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and we got a crash course in taking care of him. I feel like we've been dealing well with it, but then something happens (like Robin Williams dying) and I realize my emotions are pretty near the surface.

Both my kids started school this week, the oldest had to wait until today because the school had to train his teachers in his care in case of emergency. It was good and nerve-wracking and scary to send him off to school on his own. (He had a great day so that was a relief.)

Anyway, I hope that your kids have a good start to their school year!
