Sunday Salon: Run

You might think that the title of my post today refers to my relatively newly-discovered passion, running.  Yes, I have rehabbed my foot and have started back at it...very slowly.  No ten milers yet.  But it isn't about that.

No, the theme of this week is run, as in never stopping to sit down for ten minutes, and also as in running away.  There was a recurring theme of texts between my BFF and I this week about running away, Thelma and Louise-style.  Call me a drama queen, but the first week of school really sucks.

Slam, bam, immediately there is a ton of homework. Something that my son tends to wave off..."don't worry mom, it will get done".  (Well, friends, sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't.)  And something that stresses out my daughter to no end.  Lots of drama, tears, inability to do chores because of THE STRESS.  It is always a transition period.

Adding to the turmoil is the fact that after a very long doctor's appointment on Monday, it was determined that my son has torn his hip flexor and will be out of football for 4 to 6 weeks.  This kid NEEDS activity, and football is very good for his psyche.  Telling him that he has to attend every practice and watch as other kids get to run and hit and tackle as he sits idle for the next month and a half is NOT.  GOOD.  We had a lot of angst and rage in the house over that.

So running away.  To Mexico.  To the beach.  To the spa.  It sounded like a plausible idea.  Until the families wanted their dinner, they needed a ride somewhere, they needed more school supplies, etc.  Then it wasn't plausible.  We had a Plan B, and that was to get together Saturday night for lobster, chowda, and alcohol.  Next best thing.

So folks I have to tell you that I am OBSESSED with Breaking Bad.  I am not a TV watcher at all, but my son convinced my husband and I that we had to start watching it on Netflix. We've gotten through Season 2 and I really must emphasize that THIS IS THE BEST SHOW I'VE EVER SEEN.  EVER.  No wonder it has won a million Emmys.

So reading.  Well, I'm reading so slow that I've actually gotten caught up with my review-writing, which is scary.  I am about half-way through "The Perfume Collector" in print, and it really is a very good book.  Just not enough time to sit.  On audio, I blew through "The Husband's Secret" by Liane Moriarty (loved it) and am about 3/4 of the way through "Birdman" by Mo Hayder.  "Birdman" is the first installment of the Jack Caffrey series (you might recall me telling you that I accidentally read "Poppet" which was installment #6 - review coming next week).  This is good stuff, albeit chilling.  I'm going to try to work my way through this series as fast as I reasonably can.

I did quite a bit of stuff yesterday so I might be able to relax a bit today.  The only thing on my agenda is church and animal shelter, and hopefully I'll get at least half the day to vegetate with my book.  Crossing my fingers.  Happy Sunday everyone!

You could run away to my house or to SIBA! lol I'm with you - I always hated the start of school too. Hopefully things will settle down soon. Carl and Vance are obsessed with Breaking Bad too.

Thanks for the fun post! I used to say that also (running away with BFF when kids were younger-- we also said south of the border). I worked in schools most of my adult life as a teacher's assistant, raised three kids through public school, homeschooled one off and on when his IEP didn't amount to beans, and have 3 little grandkids in/and or starting school. I totally respect teachers, is the point I am making, but they are pressured by higher ups about the load of homework given, in many cases. I am not a believer in more than a quickie review of that day's work for homework. I could go on and on, but I won't :) Sorry that your son can't play football. Yes, beginning of school is a stressful time!

Nick had very little homework after 3 days of HS. We movies Caitie up to Jacksonville yesterday. Kevin and I would like to see The Butler. While Nick is in school this week I should be able to clean, read, and get into some routine. Hope your week is good too.

You've convinced to to try Breaking Bad... just added it to Netflix.

I totally understand the Thelma and Louise-style flight fantasy! Back to school time is just as hard on the moms. Hang in there, Sandy.

Here's hoping you get lots of downtime today!

I thought high schools didn't assign homework anymore? Your school system is much better than ours!

Hello, my friend! Long time no 'see', my bad. Glad to hear you've read 'Poppet', can't wait to find out how you felt about it. Mo Hayder is one of my favourite authors!!

School's back on for us, too. It's so weird...summer's here and then BAM, it's over. In mid-August. Oy. Hope you had that relaxing Sunday!

My parents are huge Breaking Bad fans. We'll have to add it to our Netflix list.

Ugh, the homework. I was lucky this time because they put all the emergency verification info online so I didn't have to fill out any papers for that this year, but I still have to sign waivers for sports and other crap that they are involved in. Oh, and of course the last minute requests for supplies like a $60 scientific calculator.

But we start school mid week so it was only half a week which made it easier to ease into.

The Boy got in the car this weekend and took it for a spin in a vacant parking lot. He did surprisingly well. I should thank his ASB teacher for allowing him to drive the ASB car all over campus. Not!

I was enthralled with Breaking Bad, too. It's one of the few tv series I've thought of watching all over again on Netflix. We haven't started school yet- two more weeks- not really looking forward to that stress!

The boyfriend and I have been watching Breaking Bad and we love it. As it gets darker, though, it's harder and harder to watch more than one episode at a time. There is a lot of gasping and yelling at the TV!

I'm ready to runaway too! :)

Sorry your son is out of football for a while but hope he heals nicely and soon!

I need to read those Mo Hayder books. I've heard so many good things about them!

Too much craziness for me. I can see why you want to run away. I'll be starting The Husband's Secret soon. I'm glad to hear it was good.

Sorry about your son's leg. That sucks!

Love the theme! I was ready to say that I'm jealous of your running, but now I get it. I feel like that's all I do too. I spend hours a day in the car and waiting at kids' events.

What a bummer for your son! Sounds like you have a solid plan to deal though!
