Sunday Salon: You've Been Disturbed From Your Sleep

I mentioned awhile back that I had started running again, for the first time in 25 years.  My knees are basically bone-on-bone, a mixed result of years of running as a youth and genes.  But Andre has been working on building up the muscles around my knees, and I've been easing back into this highly addictive sport.  I've always been involved in various athletics throughout my life, but there is nothing that can compare to the high that you experience when you are running. I've worked my way up to five miles, which I accomplished yesterday, fueled by a really great playlist I compiled on my iPod.  I'm sure I will pay for this achievement today and tomorrow!  But in the middle of my run, an old favorite song came up by Hothouse Flowers, and the first line was "You've been disturbed from your sleep".  It stuck in my head and has been banging around in there for the last 24 hours.  I thought it was a pretty appropriate theme for my life these days.  I haven't been this fit since I was in my early 20's.  And it feels damn good.  That was on my mind, and I just had to share.

We got through our first week of summer school and cross country practice.  My daughter seems to be finding her way, hanging tough with the upperclassmen with the running, and determined to improve.  We had some sort of tropical depression sitting on top of us this week, and we were just deluged with rain, but she was still out there getting in her miles.  I was proud.

My rhythm and routine has been completely knocked off its course though.  I've been bringing my son with me on my morning workouts with Andre, but the classes start an hour later in the summer.  So between the running around, doing prep for dinner, running a few errands, doing a load or two of laundry, it feels like I'm not getting anything done, and I have virtually no down time.  I guess that is the nature of summer - I don't know why I am so surprised.

I would like to welcome back all my friends who were having fun in New York at BEA.  The only highlight that you missed (if that is what you want to call it) was that I published by review of "Fifty Shades of Grey", and I didn't hold anything back.  I'm pointing this out as a service to you, so you can get the gist of the thing without having to read this trash.  Rhapsody Jill sent me a link to a review in a Seattle newspaper that was simply EPIC...wish I would have written it.

I'm kind of bumbling around with my reading.  I finished a TLC tour book "Darkness All Around" by Doug Magee, and have started Reavis Wortham's second installment to his Red River Series called "Burrows".  This book will be released in early July.  I just love his literary voice.  I also wrapped up John Sandford's "Stolen Prey" on audio, and have jumped into Taylor Stevens' "The Innocent".  This is the second installment in the Vanessa Munroe series and I love it and I love Taylor and everything she represents.

Today is going to be church, horse (unless it rains, which could certainly happen) and animal shelter.  And hopefully, maybe, we will go see Prometheus.  What is on your agenda for the day?

You aren't kidding about being in great shape Sandy. You look AWESOME. I am thinking of starting a couch to 5k program because I've never really been a runner... maybe that would help? I normally just elliptical for my cardio.

My blogging has been in the crapper lately but I'm trying to get back into the swing of things. Work is taking over my life!

I tried running two years ago, and I loved it except for the serious shin splints which hurt so freaking bad I was convinced bones were attempting to work their way out of my skin. These days my baby nut is preventing any serious workouts, but hopefully soon she will get on some sort of reasonable schedule and we can at least go on some longer walks.

I had no idea you were running! gaaaaah, feeling doubly inadequate! (NOT that it's a competition, but it's just more of a personal failure when someone in your life, even if it's your virtual life, is so successful in the face of one's own monumental failure!)

My knees are what gives me the most problems as well...I'd love for you to share some of the muscle building exercises you've found. I feel so much better even if I just walk slowly around the block...I had started jogging/walking a little before I got off track again.

I am so happy you are running again. I was never a runner but as hot as it ismim trying to get back to my daily walking.
Summer is a hard time for me to get a lot of reading done, but I'm trying.
I worked a few hours today, and now I'm just relaxing.

Congratulations on your increased fitness! My daughters have been an inspiration since they've been home for the summer - who know, I may change my walk into a slow jog yet!

Congratulations on the running! I'm terrible and gave up after a couple of tries. I can walk/cycle all day, but running just doesn't work for me.

I'm off to look for your 50 Shades review....

We can commiserate on running! I'm up to around 20 miles a week!

Good for you on the running! I am thinking about starting up as well but I have to lose at least 20 lbs for it to go easier for my knees and hip. Still going to the gym though.

I can't believe how far my son has run just in his first week of camp. he ran 14 miles his first week. He is in DC until late Tuesday, so he will have a lot of catching up to do since he missed an entire week of practice.

I've always wanted to be a runner. I need to do something. I'm feeling particularly frumpy with summer being here and a post-baby body.
