Sunday Salon: Squirrelly

Coming to you a little early this morning, as I am preparing to take a little road trip to the Gulf Coast to meet friends for SHOPPING!  We do this every year.  Two buddies from Indiana vacation down yonder, and while they are here, we meet at the Premium Outlets in Ellenton for retail therapy.  It is like a mini-vacation for me.  This year I don't have many clothes that fit anymore, and since I am loathe to clothing shop with the teenager, this is my big chance.

I feel like this trip could not come at a better time.  I've had stress.  My son got sucked into some trouble at school (a guilt by association thing), there are some issues at one of my book clubs that is tempting me to walk away, and my daughter has been catching squirrels.

I know I said that last week had the potential to be squirrelly, but this one truly WAS.  She had no luck with snares...big surprise...so she got herself a humane trap to catch them.  I have always been very supportive of her animal obsessions, but this is just over the top.  She caught two and them put them in a cat carrier and tried to tame them.  Both of them went into shock and just laid there, willing themselves to die, and eventually she let them go.  She really wants to catch a wild bunny.  Girl is having serious pet cravings.  Having six cats isn't enough apparently.

We had a great day working at the animal shelter yesterday.  For Cinquo de Mayo, they had a promotion called Cinquo de Meow, where all cats could be adopted for $5 instead of $40.  It was INSANE!  Cats flying everywhere, people fighting over them, babies finding new homes.  It was a beautiful thing.

As far as reading is concerned, I finally finished "Fifty Shades of Stupidity" (I mean Grey) and I am having a really really hard time trying to understand the attraction.  It is like a cornball romance only with worse writing and more deviant sex.  I'm not sure what it means that the entire female population is getting off on these books.  I really had no desire to pick it up from day to day, but needed to finish it for book club.  I would tell my husband "leave me alone, I'm reading my porn".  I have no inclination to respond to the manipulative cliff-hanger at the end and read the rest of the trilogy.  I just don't care.

Anyway.  I am now about halfway through "Pandemonium" by Lauren Oliver, the second of three books in the Delirium series.  So far it isn't as breath-taking as "Delirium", but I'm enjoying it.

On audio I finished Lee Child's "The Affair", getting my regular dose of Jack Reacher.  Now if you are looking for some smoking hot sex, forget Fifty Shades and pick up this audio.  I almost had to pull over once.  Then I listened to Jaycee Dugard's memoir "A Stolen Life", which was awful, terrible, maddening, but so inspirational.  That is one young woman who has her head screwed on straight, and is braver than I could ever be.  I am now several discs into "Heft" by Liz Moore, and it is absolutely wonderful.  The narration is as perfect as it gets.  Just...perfection.

The next few weeks I'm going to be heading into treacherous waters.  I've got an 8th grader who is graduating and there are a number of events involved...a retreat, a dinner, a party, graduation practice and then the real thing.  Two field trips on which I am chaperoning that require over two hours of driving.  Year-end planning for the Home and School board.  Preparing my daughter for high school summer school.  Year-end projects to complete.  Husband out of the country.  I have started running for the first time in...25 years I think, in order to stave off a nervous breakdown.  Running and shopping will save me, I'm just sure of it.

Sounds like you really need your mini-vacation! I'm sorry your book club put you through Shades of Grey - ugh. I have no desire to read that. Have you seen the YouTube video of Ellen Degeneres recording the audiobook? It is hysterical!

Have a great Sunday, Sandy. :)

I am in shock over the idea of someone wanting to catch squirrels. Animals creep me out though so I am definitely biased. :)

I'm impressed you made it through Fifty Shades... I didn't even bother an attempt. I have way too much going on right now to waste my time on that crap. I was planning to attend the meeting just to hear what everyone else thought but I'm afraid I might say something incredibly rude so I may not even go. Let me know if you and Heather plan to go and that will help my decision. I'm headed out to Columbus OH tonight for a week of work training so my hectic life lately continues. I hope your week isn't as crazy as you anticipate it being.

Also - A Stolen Life - what an amazing story and a truly inspiring person. I am so glad you felt the same way I did about that one.

Have a good week Sandy!!

We had to catch a bunny in a trap that got into our backyard, and the poor thing was so petrified we were afraid it would have a heart attack. Jim took it out and released it but every minute till we let it out we were worried!

I'm impressed you made it through Fifty Shades! Good for you! Will you write more of a review than this? Because I think you should and go full on snarky. :)

I can't believe she is catching squirrels. I hope the experience will help teach her that wild animals don't necessarily want to be pets.

And it wasn't quite clear to me … did you enjoy Fifty Shades of Gray or not? HAHA!

And I read that One Shot (the Jack Reacher book) is being made into a movie and guess who is playing Jack Reacher? Tom Cruise!! Sounds awfully wrong to me, doesn't it? (Then again, I didn't see him playing Lestat and he pulled it off but still. He is all wrong.)

Wow, your life sounds like a dramatic book plot now (starring an energetic and spunky mom). :) I hope that you found a lot of fabulous clothes and had fun with your friends!

I laughed out loud at what you said to your husband about having to read your porn. I can't wait to read your review of that one!

I'm actually going to write a review for 50 shades,I'm astonished it's sold so many million copies. I thought the story was stupid.
Sorry about your son. You know I relate.
Shopping with friends and for smaller sizes...nothing better. Have a total blast. I'm listening to A Stolen Life now...wow it's so sad and amazing.
Have a good week.

Oh my goodness, I didn't know squirrels would do that! I need to listen to A Stolen Life.. thanks for the reminder. I'm going to see if the library has it on audio. And the craze over Fifty Shades of Grey annoys me, and now that you've read it and confirmed what I thought about it it annoys me even more, lol.

When I was little, my mom decided she wanted squirrels, so my dad trapped a few at a park and brought them home. Now there's a family of squirrels that live in the fireplace and eat a gallons' worth of peanut butter every month. When a jar goes empty, they toss it on the ground and literally hang off the screen door until they're fed.

I am gearing up to run too. My body hasn't ran since I was in my 20's. I tried to about a month back and tore something in my leg but I am going to give it a go again. I need it to keep sane. I know you understand.

I left my book club. I don't know what is going on with yours but after 14 years with mine, I walked about because of new members being asses and it getting too political with how we do things.

Goodness, you definitely have lots on your plate right now! A friend's two daughters are both getting ready to graduate -- one from high school, the other from college -- so I've been hearing lots of pre-commencement planning. Good luck!

I see you are as busy as ever! What's going on with your book club that's making you re-think your participation? I hate it when stuff happens with book clubs. I had to drop out of a couple that just weren't reading what I wanted to read. I only belong to one now and luckily it's a good group. Small but good. Hang in there with all the goings-on and you'll have to tell us about the shopping finds :)

Oh my, Sandy.... you need a vacation! Hang in there, girl. It's got to get better, right?

It seems that September and SIBA can't get here fast enough! You know I can commiserate with the child situation, as it seems like our children are very similar. Trapping squirrels is very intense. I am surprised that she went that far. Just to let you know, my daughter found a dazed raccoon at the school the other day. She wanted to take it home. School officials were alarmed that it was acting strangely, so they called animal control. Tuns out it had some kind of disease and had to be put down. These wild animals are no joke!

As a child I used to catch mice in a humane trap, paint their tails and then release them at various distances from my house. I loved seeing which ones returned! I can't imagine trying to tame a squirrel. Don't they just bite? I hope your daughter gets over the squirrel thing quickly.

I look forward to your thoughts on 50 Shades of Grey - I can't see the attraction either.

Hope this week is less squirrelly!

Wow Sandy, what a week! I don't know how you do it. I agree with Heather on the squirrels - be careful as they carry diseases the domesticated animals don't.

I hope that retail therapy helped! Isn't it fun to g get a few new clothes - I had to do that last summer when none of my stuff fit. Thankfully it all still fits this year. Way to go on that weight loss.
