Wants and Needs (Bookmarks July/August)

With another issue of the wonderful Bookmarks comes more books that I can't help but drool over.  As much as I wish I could read them all NOW, there is a pretty good chance I will never put my hands on them.  So the next best thing is to talk about them for a little bit and get you all excited about them as well.  I had to laugh at myself this time around...every single book is a "need"!!!
"All Clear" - Connie Willis:  Having just finished Willis's "The Doomsday Book" I am now a believer.  "All Clear" is the sequel to "Blackout", both about time travel between the year 2060 and WWII in England...how can you go wrong with this?  In the critical summary, it calls this novel "some of the strongest storytelling of Willis's career".  Ok then.  Side note:  I realize there is a read-along occurring with these books as I speak...I will just a little too late this time!

"The End of the Affair" - Graham Greene:  Don't yell at me, I've never read this and it is high time I should.  Greene was the feature this month and it has inspired me to get on the bandwagon.  Who can resist a love story that takes place in WWII?

"Flashback" - Dan Simmons:  I never did have the courage to read the enormous "Drood" by Simmons but I loved "The Terror".  The story is about an earth in the not-so-distant future, where the US is falling apart and 87% of the population is addicted to a drug that allows them to relive the best moments of their lives.  Cool.

"In the Garden of Beasts" - Erik Larson:  My brain almost exploded when I read "The Devil in the White City", and it assured Larson top spot for historical non-fiction in my heart.  He is back to blow our minds again with the story about a mild-mannered historian sent to Berlin with his family to be the ambassador to Germany during WWII.  (Yes I know there is a WWII theme going on here this morning.)

"A Death in Summer" - Benjamin Black: I've read all but the last Quirk novel and I really enjoy them.  Great murder mysteries, great protagonist.  I love my series.

Dan Simmons is an author I really want to try. I almost bought a copy of Drood a few weeks ago, but in the end I decided I had enough chunksters on my shelf already! I love the sound of Flashback - I may have to start with that one.

I can't remember if you read Blackout yet, but really Blackout and All Clear are the same book in two parts. You can't really skip Blackout and go directly to All Clear!

I think you need all of those titles too, especially All Clear! Some days, I'd like to forget all my responsibilities and read to my heart's content.

Bookmarks always jacks up my tbr pile to an ungodly amount. The Erik Larson book interests me but I am waiting to read more reviews on it before I decide whether or not to give it a go.

You definitely want to have All Clear on hand when you finish Blackout - they're really just two halves of one majorly long chunkster!

The only Greene I've read is The Quiet American, and it was brilliant - must read more of him. In fact, the latest Bookmarks has me thinking of hosting a Graham Greene reading challenge in 2012.

I just ripped the CDs of the audio version of In the Garden of Beasts to my computer for transfer to my MP3 player - never read anything by him before.

Love how we always find different books to highlight in our Bookmarks posts!

I am going to be reading the Simmons book hopefully soon, but am really excited about the Willis book. I have a few of hers on my shelf and the next one I think I am going to pick up is Passage, which I have heard some pretty incredible things about. It's one that you might want to check out as well at some point, though I am sure I can lend it to you once I have finished it. Thanks for sharing all these drool worthy books with us today!

I couldn't get into THE TERROR, but I really liked FLASHBACK. It's long, but exciting and original. Bleak, but that's to be expected from an adult dystopian.

Both Blackout and All Clear were fun reads. I checked them out from the library and when I finished added them to my wish list. I definitely want to own them so that I can re-read them at will in the future.

The Garden of Beasts was a pretty good read too.

I have never read "The End of the Affair" either...but I am tempted.

I've always wanted to read "The End of the Affair," too, especially after I saw a documentary on Graham Greene. But haven't gotten around to it yet!

You have some great books listed here. Doomsday Book was wonderful, wasn't it? I'm doing the Blackout/All Clear read along. I've fallen a few weeks behind but still stop by to discuss as I catch up to each section.

Having just read Blackout and All Clear, you MUST read them in order as they are really one giant book split into two parts. It won't make ANY sense if you start with All Clear.

All of these sound so good. I've only read one Greene book which I thought was fantastic but for some reason I've not gone back to read any more. Bad bookgirl.

That Flashback book sounds very cool.

I read The End of the Affair last year and really enjoyed it. I'm also dying to read Larson's new book. If you haven't read his book, "Isaac's Storm," it's really good.
