Monday Movie Meme - Deep Impact

This week, our Monday Movie Meme topic from the Bumbles was actually suggested by one of their readers, Cardiogirl. (Off the subject for just a moment, but if you have not checked out Cardiogirl's blog, you must. She almost defies description. She's hilarious, thoughtful, manic, and real.) Anyway, what was I saying? Oh yeah. Cardiogirl's suggestion is to list a movie that has changed your life, your world view, or your behavior. A movie that inspired a passion perhaps.

Talk about a deep question at 5am on Monday morning! Well, I stepped away from the computer for a moment, and determined that there have been many movies that have caused me to re-evaluate life. The Shawshank Redemption made me consider the power of hope. Jaws made me afraid to go into the ocean. Super Size Me made me never want to eat fast food again. The High Cost of Low Price completely turned me off of Wal Mart. But few movies have shaken me to the core quite like:

The Passion of Christ

I've always been a Christian, and before I had children, I went through the long process of becoming Catholic. But nothing in my religious background prepared me for this movie. The brutality of the Passion, Jesus' suffering and death for our sins, made all too vivid and gut-wrenching on the big screen, was both humbling and enlightening. I would never go through another mass without remembering this visual. I would never go through another Holy Week, and recite the Passion, without being moved to tears.

So grab a cup of coffee, and kickstart your brain. Which movies have made their mark on your psyche? Please share!

That's a super question for a movie meme. I'd really have to think hard, because I'm not at all sure what I'd pick.

I haven't watched The Passion of Christ - you make me want to find a copy right now!

I guess that movie just felt like it would hit too close to home...I just couldn't watch it.

Wasn't The Shawshank Redemption great? I think I've seen it 10 times! If you're interested, there is another movie that never got the same publicity that is similar and really good, An Innocent Man with Tom Selleck.

I've heard good things about the movie. I also chose a movie about Christ. my Monday movie

I loved Shawshank Redemption too. I did see The Passion of Christ and although I'm not a particularly religious person it did break my heart. Some of those scenes were just so brutal. I thought it was a terrific, profound movie, but one I couldn't watch again.

Schindler's List was one of the hardest movies for me to watch. Higher Learning also upset me a great deal.

Life is Beautiful made me realize how influential we can be when helping our children deal with difficult situations. I've not seen The Passion of the Christ...can't believe it but I haven't!

Beth - I know, it certainly stumped me early this morning! I did actually have to walk away, close my eyes and THINK!

Jackie - Well, it is not a "date night" movie, but I guess it really shouldn't be. It is quite sobering.

hmsgofita - you are right, it does hit close to home. I was a total mess of tears.

Book Bird Dog - I love that choice. What a beautiful movie!

Jill - everytime Shawshank comes on TV, I have to watch. It just lifts my spirits. I will have to check out your recommendation. If it even comes close to SSR, I must see it.

Kaye - I'm off to see!

Carolyn - no, this is not something I'd want to see too many times in my life. But I think if I ever need a reality check, or maybe a sin check, it is what the doctor ordered.

Alyce - Schindler's List actually did come to mind for this question. It took me a long time to get over, and maybe even inspired my fascination with WWII media.

Kathleen - that one came to mind too. There are certain movies that haunt you long after you've watched them. I get teary just thinking about it!

Schindler's List and Sophie's Choice were the first two that came to mind.
And of course you are right about The Passion of the Christ. It is a difficult movie to watch, but is you have read about the reality of torture under the Romans and the reality of death by crucifixion, it is very accurate. So, yes, it SHOULD be hard to watch because the reality is horrible. That is sort of the point I think.

Mel made a truly great movie...right before he went off the deep end.

I have had Passion of the Christ on my Netflix queue forever, but I've been too afraid to give it a try. Not sure I could make it through it.

Good question this week!

Great choice, Sandy! I am embarassed to admit I completely forgot about this movie! I found parts of it very hard to watch bit it's quite a powerful movie. Mt dad converted to Catholicism a few years before he met and married my mom. They, too have always watched this movie.

That is a pretty deep question for a meme. I've never seen Passion of the Christ, but can definitely see how that would make a deep impact.

Hmm, probably the movie that made the deepest impact on me was... Indiana Jones. :P Just because I watched it so much when I was little, and I really wanted to be Indiana Jones (or at the very least Indy's girlfriend). And I have to admit that's one of the big reasons why I got into art history. :)

OK. Take #2. I typed out this great comment and then didn't get the word verif. right before I had moved on and everything got erased. Grrrr! So anyway - I have not seen Passion and never had a big desire to. I'm not Catholic and don't have a traditional relationship with God so I'm not sure it would have as profound an effect on me as it has you and others. But I'm game to find out.

This is a great meme question. I loved The Shawshank Redemption (it is Mr. L-S's favorite movie of all time), but have never seen The Passion of Christ. Or Schindler's List. Two that I know are must sees. Someday...

Hello,
I have yet to see more then a bit of this one. I was working on the computer which makes it hard to read sub titles. - I hope to get to it really soon.

It is so funny. Usually I only have one or two movies on my meme list and others have like 6. For this one I have a big list and most others have one.

Go figure- My List
Thanks for sharing!
