Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing - Judy Blume (audio)

When the kids and I first arrived home from Indiana, our first errand was to visit the library. It is tragic to find ourselves without kid audios! Our goal was to find the second installments of Pendragon and Maximum Ride, but we had no luck, so we started grabbing audios at random, and came out with this one. You really can't miss with a Judy Blume book, and this particular one had some nostalgic meaning to me, having read it as a kid.

For those that have missed out on this precious piece of Americana for children everywhere, the story is narrated by Peter, a 9 year old living in NYC. His parents annoy him now and again, but his real problem...the bain of his existence really...is his 3 year-old brother Fudge. Fudge is probably one of the most annoying, but laughingly realistic toddlers on paper.
Fudge eats flowers and small pets, but refuses to eat food he is served at dinner. His favorite word is "no". He destroys school projects, and drives away his father's business accounts with one hand tied behind his back. We feel Peter's pain and suffering as the big brother of a classic pain in the neck.

This audio was short and sweet - 3 discs only. It was well-narrated and laugh-out-loud funny. Even thirty some odd years after I read this book for the first time, I still feel an unresolved anger and frustration towards the funny but obnoxious Fudge! My kids felt the same way. Fudge fully entertained them, but throughout the entire audio, they kept screaming "oh my gosh!" at Fudge's antics. There are no bad words and no inappropriate themes for younger children. The harshest words uttered is the word "hate", which is a real emotion when your little brother destroys everything you own.

I loved Judy Blume growing up. I wonder if I read them now they would be as good as I remember?

That sounds like a fun read! I need to read more Judy Blume's books as a remembrance of those good old days of mine, haha.

I grew up in Europe, so I’ve never heard of Judy Blume before. Thanks for mentioning it! It does sound like a fun read:)

Carolyn - This was the second Judy Blume I've read recently (the other was Are You There God...)and they most definitely tickled me. It is hard not to view them differently, being all grown up now, but equally as entertaining!

Melody - it brings back the memories! I like sharing them with my kids.

Brenda - it is fun and quick, and most kids are going to love it!

Amy - it is really well-narrated. Great for "boring" rides around town running errands!

Nikola - well, you just freaking made my day! I used it because it is probably the most common thing to come out of my mouth. I'm always pushing books onto my friends!

Andreea - Judy Blume is great. Just for grins you should grab a few. You could probably read five of them in a day or two!

You know what I like? That your reviews are as interesting and in depth reagardless of genre.

Lauren - exactly! I want to give this gift to my kids!

Bumbles - well thank you! I did question how one reviews something like Judy Blume, but you just can't shut me up!

Amy - it is a nice trip down memory lane! When I re-read Are You There God, It's Me Margaret, I still knew many of the words, I read it so many times as a kid!

I never read this one as a kid but I did read Judy Blume growing up. She's written some pretty good adult ones as well.

I missed the Judy Blume revolution--you make me sorry that I did. That's the mark of a great review!

I think I was actually in fourth grade when this came out. My mom read it to me and my little brother. She loved it, and Blubber which I think is a sequel. After that we could read any Judy Blume books we wanted. Of course, she promptly moved on to themes we didn't discuss with Mom.

I remember reading the Fudge books when I was young. They were hilarious.

I don't remember this one, but I'm sure I read all the Judy Blume books when I was younger. I'd also love to know what I thought of them now I'm an adult. I'm tempted to give one a try - it is only 3 discs after all!
